The Brewery

The Steamin’ Billy brewery brand was formed in 1998 when local Leicester landlord Barry Lount asked one of his beer suppliers Bill Allingham from Leatherbritches Brewery if he could produce a house beer for the Cow & Plough in Oadby.

The beer was so named after Barry’s dog Billy who used to return from an hour or two chasing rabbits over the Leicestershire countryside “steamin” as the locals would say, with steam rising from his back while he panted and enjoyed half a bowl of beer.

Billy and Barry then set about finding outlets for the beer. The beers were brewed by Leatherbritches until 2000, but demand out grew capacity and the brewing was moved to The Grainstore in Oakham. The brewing moved for a time to the Tower Brewery in Burton from 2008 to 2010 then moved back to The Grainstore until March 2013. The beers are now brewed by Colin Brown at The Belvoir Brewery in Old Dalby, Belvoir are currently brewing Tipsy Fisherman, Steamin Billy and the increasingly popular 1485.

Billy likes to look after his friends, 5p from every bootle of Billy Bitter sold goes to Leicester RSPCA. Bottles available in a 3 pack gift box for £8.50 from partisipating sites.

Our Famous Beers

TIPSY FISHERMAN (3.6%)
Traditional light amber coloured bitter, mellow crisp flavour with hoppy aftertaste, quaffing ale that tastes more robust than its strength suggests.

BITTER (4.3%)
Light Golden 3 hop English bitter, pronounced floral flavour and aroma followed by a lingering aftertaste that goldings hops provide.

SKYDIVER (5%)
Full strength mahogany coloured beer, a fine balance of malty sweetness and Hop bitterness. Deceivingly drinkable.

Dark Chocolate in colour with a lingering roasted bitter finish.

Light Golden Summer brew with a finely balance floral flavour.

A Pale Ale created with Goldings Hops – very drinkable!
